RAAK

Raak Light Architecture; A Unique Approach to Light

Raak Lichtarchitectuur, founded in 1954 by Carel Lockhorn together with J.M. Mansfeld and E.C. Nijsens, has always had a unique approach to light; both in function and design, Raak, in its own words, hits the nail on the head. Lockhorn’s vision was simple but revolutionary: ‘I don’t sell lamps, I sell light.’ This principle led to a focus on aesthetically pure forms perfectly integrated into architecture.

Through this innovative approach, Raak grew into an international concern in the 20th century, with branches in cities such as Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and many others. Raak’s lamps can be found worldwide, from the mosque in Baghdad to hotels in Hong Kong and museums in America.

Known for their cutting-edge designs, the multidisciplinary RAAK Design Team[1] collaborated with designers from all over the world. Many of their creations are considered works of light art.

Partly with the help of the Raak catalogues, we are currently working to get the story of Raak Light Architecture as complete as possible on paper. Have you worked at Raak or have information about Raak that might be of interest. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
